In-Situ Chemical Oxidation with Ozone in gas phase: lesson learnt from the first Italian full-scale application

Luigi Amighetti, Elio Crescini, Andrea Guerini – NCE Srl

Giancarlo Riva, Federico Dallera – Ozono Elettronica Internazionale Srl

The first Italian full-scale application of In-Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO) via gaseous Ozone, carried out for the remediation of unsaturated and saturated soils contaminated by cutting oil in an industrial site in Northern Italy, has provided a number of precious indications regarding the design and operations of this technology.

This remedial plan has been developed under the procedure for site remediation foreseen by Legislative Decree n. 152/06, the Italian framework law on environmental issues, and approved by the presiding authorities.

Monitoring data and field observations have allowed to trace a first picture of process performance and identify the principal factors governing effectiveness and success of the remediation.

The presented paper – starting from an essay on the same subject discussed by the authors at the 2008 RemTech symposium – describes the rationale of the technology, its critical pathways and how they can affect contaminant abatement and overall remediation performance.

The treatment has been carried out by means of an ozone generator fed by air. Ozone has been applied in gas phase, not dissolved into the water. Maximum ozone production is 3 kgO3/h at an ozone concentration of 30 gO3/Nm3 (approx 2,3 %wt). So the ozone generator needs 100 Nm3/h of dryed air. The ozone generator consists of a skid including both the PSU (Power Supply Unit), both the ozone vessel and both the air dyer. The air dryer is able to deliver 100 Nm3/h at a dew point of – 70 °C.

The installation of the ozone generator skid, air compressor (including buffer tank and accessories) has been realized inside a ready-built industrial house. The installation has been placed near the injection wells: the injection of the gas, infact, is obtained by using n. 2 PVC wells (4 inches of diameter each one). The ozone leaving the ozone generator has a pressure of 1,7 bar.g: this fact grant the possibility to use the residual pressure of the produced gas to reach the injection wells and come in contact with the polluted soil.
